| Jesus' Sermon on the Mount |
|
You have heard that it was said, "Thou shalt not commit adultery." But I say to you that every one who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart . . . . You have heard that it was said, "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth." But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also . . . . You have heard that it was said, "Thou shalt love thy neighbor, and hate thine enemy." But I say to you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who spitefully use you and persecute you; so that you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust . . . . Beware of practicing your piety before men in order to be seen by them; for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. Thus, when you give alms, sound no trumpet before you . . . . But when you give aims, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing . . . . Enter at the strait [narrow] gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many there be which enter by it. Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there be that find it. SOURCE: Matthew 5:27-28; 38-39; 43-45; 6:1-2; 7:13.
