  1.  Why, in more cases than not, did the central government of traditional China do something TO the ordinary
       peasant rather than FOR the peasant?

  2.  What took the place of laws in settling disputes or dealing with crime in Chinese villages and towns?

  3.  Who governed on the local level?  How were these people chosen and from what groups?

  4.  What vital functions did the village gentry serve through the centuries?

  5.  What distinguished the gentry from the peasant class?

  6.  Describe the village of Long Bow--where was it located?  What was the size of the village?  Why did the
       population vary?

  7.  To what extreme measures did the Chinese in this village go in order to farm as much land as possible?

  9.  Describe the Chinese land system and culture that had survived for centuries.  Which was Long Bow's richest
       family?  What was the source of this family's wealth/

10.  Ching-ho's "empire" consisted of more than farmland.  Was any of his wealth "ill-gotten gains"?  Explain.

11.  What is graft?  Were the gentry the only social class guilty of taking advantage of the poor peasants?

12.  In what way were the peasant's religious beliefs to blame for their acceptance of their fate?  Give three other
      reasons why they accepted their fate.  Did peasants always accept their fate?
