| autonomy | The quality or state of being self-governing; especially the right of self-government. |
| Boer War | War between Britain army and the Boers, or Afrikaners, over the transvaal area; British were victorious . |
| Boxer Rebellion | Patriotic uprising by Chinese nationalists against Western encroachment; fight to expel all foreigners in China. |
| colonialism | Control of overseas colonies by imperial powers; a foreign power rules a large group of people; the foreign power uses the colony for wealth and has more advanced technology than the people of the colonies. |
| decolonization | To free from colonial status. |
| imperialism | The policy, practice, or advocacy of extending the power and dominion of a nation especially by direct territorial acquisitions or by gaining indirect control over the political or economic life of other areas; extension or imposition of power, authority, or influence. |
| Mahatma Gandhi | Leader for Indian independence from Great Britain; used civil disobedience, a form of nonviolent resistance. |
| mother country | The country from which the people of a colony or former colony derive their origin. |
| nationalism | A common identity; a specific geographic area; a common language, history, destiny, culture, ethnicity, or religion; feeling of belonging. |
