FRANCE AND ENGLAND’S CHRONOLOGY

FOR THE REIGNS OF

LOUIS XIV AND CHARLES I

 

1625—Charles I becomes king and marries Henrietta Maria.

1629—Charles I dissolves Parliament.

1630—Charles II is born.

1639—The First Bishop’s War; Charles I’s suffers military humiliation.

1640—Parliament summoned for first time since 1629; The Second Bishop’s War; The Scots occupy 
             Newcastle and impose severe economic terms on Charles I.

1642—Charles I military coup against the Long Parliament fails; First skirmishes in between Charles and
             Parliament.

1643—Louis XIV becomes King of France; The Court at Oxford, a year of Royalist success in England.

1644—The Scots enter England and ally with Parliament; they defeat the Royalists at Marston Moor.

1646—The First Civil War ends in England; Charles I surrenders to the Scots at Newark.

1647—Charles I is taken into custody by the army and is imprisoned; he escapes, but is recaptured and
             imprisoned at Carisbrooke Castle.

1648—The Second English Civil War breaks out and ends in Royalist defeat; Charles I moves to Hurst Castle,
             Hampshire in preparation for his trial.

1649—Charles I is executed, and the monarchy is abolished in England.

1667—Louis XIV’s first war against the Triple Alliance of the Dutch, English, and the Swedes.

1668—First war ends.

1669—The building of Versailles begins.

1651--- Charles II is crowned at Scone.

1670—Charles II and King Louis XIV make the Treaty of Dover.

1672—Louis XIV’s Dutch War.

1678—Dutch War ends with peace at Nimwegen.

1681—Charles II dismisses Parliament.

1685—Louis XIV issues the Edict of Fontainebleau.

1688—Versailles is completed; Glorious Revolution occurs in England; William and Mary of Orange restore
             the monarch.

1689—The War of the League of Augsburg; The English Bill of Rights is passed making giving the monarch
             limited power.

1697—The Treaty of Ryswick ends the War of the League of Augsburg.

1702—Louis XIV’s War of Spanish Succession.

1713—The Peace of Utrecht ends the War of Spanish Succession.

1714—The Peace of Rastatt is made for the War of Spanish Succession.

1715—Louis XIV dies.
