1905

• Jan. 22 --> Bloody Sunday…Czarist troops open fire on a peaceful demonstration of workers in
                      St. Petersburg.

• Dec.--> Moscow Soviet organizes insurrection in response to the suppression at St. Petersburg in               January…fails.

1906

• Jan. --> Duma dissolved.

1914

• June 28 --> Assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip, a Serbian, evoking                      the outbreak of World War I, new wave of workers unrest ends.

1917

• Feb. --> Government orders troops to open fire on Petrograd, troops mutiny and join                   
                 insurrections, Czar abdicates after hearing that Moscow has also joined the revolution,
                agreement reached between the Petrograd Soviet and Lvov’s Provisional Government

• March --> Lenin, after being exiled in Siberia, returns to St. Petersburg, now renamed Petrograd

• May --> Milyukov resigns…members of Mensheviks and Socialist Revolutionaries join                 
                government.

• June 3 --> 1^st All-Russia Congress of Workers and Soldiers Soviets opens.

• July 3, 4 --> The July Days… Workers and soldiers in Petrograd demand the Soviet takes power,
                       fighting results, Soviet restores power with troops brought back from the front,
                       Trotsky arrested, Lenin goes into hiding.

• July 8 --> new provisional government set up with Kerensky as leader.

• Aug. --> The Kornilov Putsch… General Kornilov attempts to establish a right wing dictatorship
                 but fails, Chernov (leader of Soviet Revolutionaries) resigns from the government.

• Sept. --> Bolsheviks win control of Petrograd Soviet, peasant seizures of land leads to near
                  insurrection in Tambov.

• Oct. --> Bolsheviks overthrow the Provisional government.

• Oct. 26, 27 --> Soviet proclamations on land and peace, death penalty abolished.

• Oct. 30 --> Kerensky repulsed outside Petrograd.

• Nov. 2 --> Bolsheviks gain Moscow.

• Nov. 12-14 --> Elections of the Constituent Assembly in which Soviet Revolutionaires are the
                            largest party.

• Dec. --> Congress of Socialist Revolutionaries resuts in victory for the left under Chernov,
                 Menshevik Congress gives victory to Martov’s Menshevik Internationalists.

1918

• Feb. 18 --> Germans invade a defenseless Russia as virtually its entire army has deserted.

• March --> Bolsheviks accept the dictated peace of Brest-Litovsk.

• April 12 --> Moscow headquarters of the anarchists surrounded and attacked by Bolshevik troops.

• May 9 --> Bolshevik troops open fire on workers protesting at food shortages in the town of
                   Kolpino.

• late May --> Bolshevik control swept away from vast areas of Russia by rebellious  
                       Czechoslovakian legion mutinies…this is supported by Soviet Revolutionaries.
  

1919

• Feb. 25 --> return to despotic rule by Bolsheviks.

1920

• April 25 --> Poland invades Russia.

1921

*** National Economic Policy, (NEP), introduced by Lenin ***

1922

• Dec. 30 --> Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.) created

1924

*** Lenin dies, Trotsky defeated by a triumvirate: Stain, Kamenev, and Zinoviev ***

1928

*** Lenin’s NEP replaced with Stalin’s "Five-Year Plan" ***
