This Web Quest asks students to assume the roles of members of the House of Representatives who will debate three articles of impeachment against Andrew Jackson.

The goal is to allow
students to get a more in-depth understanding of the constitutional issues at stake in this “trial” and that they would begin to see these issues in the larger
context of the political debates taking place in the nation at the time concerning:  the reasons for and effects of westward expansion, slavery, treatment of Native Americans, the “culture wars” of the early 19c between rural Americans and an industrializing economic/intellectual coastal elite [sound familiar?].

This Web Quest experience should lay the groundwork for further discussions on these issues as students continue their study of the 19c.

This lesson is the culmination project for the course, "Teaching with Web Quests,"
taken during the summer of 2005 and sponsored by the Teacher Education Institute.
